about

Do you wanna hear a scary story? You’ll find a few on this long-playing record album. You’ll also find some frightening music tracks – all perfectly calculated to give you the whim-whams! However, the story of how this soundtrack came about is far removed from the harrowing recordings created to spin the traumatic tale(s) experienced by Agatha Black.

Having grown up in the 70s, listening to story records had been a big part of my daily life. I would spend hours in my bedroom listening to silly novelty albums, sound effects recordings and, most memorable of all, tales of horror and suspense. The basic concept for 13 TRACKS TO FRIGHTEN AGATHA BLACK came about in 2004 when I discovered a blog page devoted to scary story and sound effects records (primarily from the 60s and 70s). I became obsessed. After months of listening to these creepy gems, I wrote a film treatment about a young woman who rediscovers a box of scary story records from her childhood – and becomes obsessed with them. AGATHA PLAYS SCARY RECORDS AT NIGHT was the working title and the action took place over the course of one night as the protagonist listened to a series of tales that became increasingly more personal and deadly. When I finished writing, I promptly set it aside knowing that such a project would need a talented sound designer and composer to help make the stories come to life.

Skipping over several tracks (and years) later I met the ideal person for the gig. Andrew Jones was a terrific songwriter and producer, who shared my enthusiasm for the weird and wonderful. Soon after, I found myself writing the screenplay based on that treatment – and beginning a journey that would take another several years to complete. One of the most significant moments of the production, for me, came during the post process when Andrew was recording the soundtrack. Working with a talented group of musicians, I sat in his home studio and watched them create the atmospheric music for Agatha’s world. Like one would see on many (much more expensive) scoring productions, Andrew played the scenes on a screen while he and his team began to improvise. We had discussed in advance the kind of mood or classic film score that would inform the music in each scene, so everyone already had some kind of reference going in. Watching them all jamming to the visuals and bringing each scene to life was an exhilarating and truly satisfying experience. The recording session marked the end of the audio work for 13 TRACKS, but certainly not the end of a creative collaboration that promises more frightening stories in the future.

One of the classic records that inspired our film repeatedly asks the listener ‘Are YOU one of the frightened?’ If so, I think you will be pleased with the various tracks on this LP – best heard in the blackest hours of a cold and windy night, when reason is lost to the wind…

Stay frightened,
Bradley Steele Harding
